Bird Watching Cruise – 16th November 2024

Saturday, November 16th, painted a serene picture on the River Exe. Despite the overcast sky, the day was calm and peaceful, a perfect setting for a boat trip with a lovely crowd. The comforting aroma of freshly baked pasties filled the lower (and heated) deck as we departed from Exmouth Marina, setting the tone for a cozy and enjoyable experience.

Our journey took us out into Lyme Bay, where we encountered a lively scene at Pole Sands. Oystercatchers, Curlew, and a flock of crows were busily foraging for shellfish exposed by the receding tide. As we turned back, for the Exe Estuary itself, we passed the impressive sandbank of Bull Hill, which was teeming with Oystercatchers diligently hunting for cockles.

The Exe Estuary’s birdlife was the highlight of the day, as always. We spotted several Greenhanks near Starcross and two curious Harbour Seals basking on a mudbank off Exton. The upper reaches of the river were particularly vibrant with plenty of waders to be seen. A large flock of Avocets had gathered to feed in a synchronized dance, presumably harassing shrimp in the shallow waters. A breathtaking fly-past of six hundred Golden Plover added to the spectacle.

As the sun began to set, we headed back to the estuary mouth, where a gathering of Little Egrets awaited their nightly roost. While we couldn’t spot any Cattle Egrets, the serene beauty of the scene made up for it.

This winter cruise on the Exe was a reminder of the estuary’s enduring charm, no matter the season. The combination of stunning scenery, diverse wildlife, and a peaceful atmosphere made for a truly unforgettable experience.
