Today, we set sail on a winter’s day, the sky a muted canvas, the sea a restless expanse beyond our destination of a cruise on the River Exe. Despite the unassuming weather, the River Exe was alive with activity, offering a feast for the eyes, many assisted by the included binoculars for even better views!
Our adventure began with a thrilling encounter with three Common Scoters, diving gracefully amidst the breaking waves near Pole Sands. As we cruised along the edge of Dawlish Warren, we were greeted by flocks of Brent Geese, their sleek forms contrasting against the winter sky.
Passing Bull Hill, a haven for Greater Black-backed Gulls and Great Cormorants (there in their plenty), provided a stunning backdrop, but it was the unexpected presence of two Great Northern Divers that truly stole the show! These magnificent birds, with their distinctive black and white plumage, effortlessly glided through the water, diving deep in search of fish.
As we ventured further up the estuary, we were treated to a symphony of birdlife. Little Egrets stalked the shoreline, while Great Crested Grebes bobbed on the water. Curlews, Grey Plovers, Bar-tailed Godwits, a Greenshank and Dunlin, and lots of Oystercatchers filled the mudflats, each species with its own unique charm.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the sight of hundreds of Avocets near Turf Locks. Their elegant silhouettes dancing across the shallow waters whilst they fed. A large flock of 300+ Black-tailed Godwits where also spotted as we sailed towards Topsham at the water’s edge. 200+ Golden Plover and Lapwing added to the spectacle, their synchronized flight from the mudflats were a breathtaking sight to behold, just from the otherside of the channel. Honestly, there was so much going on, it was a lot to take in all at once! And that is by no means a complaint!
As the tide turned, the birds retreated to their high-tide roosts, leaving behind a serene and peaceful estuary. It was a reminder of the incredible diversity of life that thrives in this unique environment, ever changing through not just the seasons, but the day, governed by the tides.
This winter’s day on the Exe was a testament to the enduring magic of this coastal waterway. It’s a place where nature’s beauty and the wonders of wildlife come together to create unforgettable experiences. All in all, a very successful and enjoyable cruise. I look forward the next one!
